Prenatal Hydronephrosis PDF E-mail

Hydronephrosis simply means water (hydro) on the kidney (nephron). This condition is easily seen with ultrasound. It may be of little clinical significance and have no effect on kidney function or drainage. Or it may be severe and cause a decrease in kidney function and impaired drainage and pain.

Maternal PRENATAL ultrasound has taught us that HYDRNEPHROSIS is often congenital (present at birth). The degree of hydronephrosis dictates the subsequent evaluation. Some cases resolve with time but, most often, hydronephrosis is stable and persists.

Vesicoureteral reflux (urine refluxing back up into the kidney) may be a cause of hydronephrosis. Also, hydronephrosis can develop as a result of kidney stones, or after an injury to the urinary tract.
